Asklit is a simple, low-friction template for standalone AI-powered chatbot with access to a knowledgebase. You can easily share an Asklit with the general public or behind a password.

Asklit is easy to use!

  1. Create your Asklit using a simple graphical builder tool
  2. Save your work on GitHub
  3. Get an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or use a locally hosted AI
  4. Publish the Asklit for free on Streamlit community cloud, Fly.io, Render, or Huggingface Spaces

Why Asklit?

I built Asklit after 2 years of wishing OpenAI’s Custom GPT feature could be easily shared with the general public. Custom GPTs are very powerful despite their simplicity, but if you want to share a Custom GPT you created, your users need to have a ChatGPT account. Free users of ChatGPT both give up access to their private information and quickly run into quota limits.

Privacy first

When you share an Asklit, you are automatically opting in to use the enterprise privacy policy of the AI provider, meaning your data is not used for training an AI model. Asklits never save your conversation history.

You decide the quality and cost

Asklit is a “bring your own AI” solution. You choose which AI model to use, and you decide how much to spend. Add limits on the AI provider side to ensure costs stay below what you expect. In most cases, each user will cost no more than a few cents per-use.

Security features included

All deployments get quotas and rate-limits, and if you choose the right AI provider, you can set strict budgets.

These controls are pretty limited still. For more powerful controls, use Google Cloud Run or Fly.io with Cloudflare in front to keep things safer.

I need more features. What should I use instead?

Asklit is deliberately simple, focused on simple one-chatbot-at-a-time use cases. For more complicated setups, I recommend OpenWebUI or Librechat; however, neither solution allows anonymous access to a chatbot.
